The Way of the Animator

Introduction
Before we get into the how and what part, consider this statement by Walt Disney : 'I love Mickey Mouse more than any woman I've ever known.' There has to be a certain amount of truth in that statement. That little mouse -- who first appeared in October 1928 -- has inspired generations of children and adults, made millions giggle like teenagers, and ensured earnings of a  whole lot of money by some people. 

Animation is fast becoming a hugely interesting way to make a living. And, considering the interest now shown by biggies like Walt Disney and Warner Bros in Indian companies, the money animators are being paid doesn't hurt either.

The first 2-D colour animation was the creation of cartoon characters and scenes. Each frame was painstakingly drawn and painted by hand on cells, which were captured on camera in sequence to create the film. The first 3-D animation was stop-motion animation, where the artist used 3-D sculptures and forms to create the scene, photograph it, alter it slightly and photograph it again, continuing in sequence to create the animation clip. Today's animators use powerful animation software and computers to create 2-D and 3-D animation for web sites, film and video, gaming and mobile media. Drawing and sculpting skills still play a role in today's animation, but cutting-edge technology has combined with art to expand the horizons of creativity and productivity. Many animators have an associate's or bachelor's degree in an animation-related field, while others have a high school diploma and similar experience and skill.
